Interactive Transport Map

Between 1790 and 1860, established towns and cities along the Connecticut River experienced rapid growth and decline due to a variety of factors. This interactive map compares population data (Link to PDF) with the development of transportation routes throughout the region.Students and teachers can begin to explore the ways in which these two data sets are related and ways that they are not. This interactive map is used in combination with a chart on transportation costs (Link to PDF) in the Life on the Riverbanks lesson, designed to help students understand the impact of the Transportation Revolution.
  1. What patterns can you find in the development of towns and railroads in the region?
  2. What period showed the greatest expansion?
  3. How do the canals and railroads seem to impact one another?
Instructions and tips
1. Select the data sets you would like to display on the map (listed below the map) 2. You can adjust the time range to display new data for the specific period.
  • Towns: The three Town buttons allow you to select towns and cities within individual states or to look at settlements in two or three states.
  • Geography:  The Falls button allows you to highlight Falls on the map, as these areas presented the greatest obstacles to using the Upper Connecticut River for transport of goods and people.
  • Transportation: The Transportation buttons allow you to choose to show one or more of the following man-made improvements along the river -- canals, roads and bridges. In addition, the Highways button will show the modern-day highways that parallel the transportation routes of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
  • Time range: The drop down time range allows you to look at data points on the map for a specific time period between 1790 and 1860.
